Seemingly minor changes in track geometry can conceivably have disastrous consequences for the public with routine maintenance, construction and environmental conditions having the ability to severely affect the safe running of the railway.
Using a combination of manned target monitoring, remote track monitoring systems and top and line surveys, our technicians help preserve track safety by monitoring for undue cant, twist and settlement. Not usually necessary under normal conditions, these techniques are generally employed when construction activities or environmental conditions may affect the stability of the tracks.
Working to Network Rail Standard NR/BS/LI/045, City Surveys’ monitoring engineers deliver track monitoring services almost every working day to a range of valued clients from Colas Rail and May Gurney to Stobart Rail, BAM Nuttall and Morgan Sindall.
From custom-made aluminium targets paired with one-second total stations to fully automated, remote monitoring systems feeding back data in real time, our dedicated track monitoring systems deliver reliable, precision measurement data direct to stakeholders, thereby ensuring the continued operation of the railway.
One of the largest firms of our type, we operate throughout the UK delivering measurement and engineering services across a range of sectors.
Proven track record
Every year we deliver hundreds of projects on time and on budget to a loyal client base. Over 70% of our work is based upon repeat business.
We save you money
By working harder, longer and more intelligently, over the years we’ve actually saved our clients millions in unnecessary costs and delays.
Honest, transparent pricing
The price we quote is the price you pay. If your brief is accurate and the scope remains the same there will be no additional costs whatsoever.
Training and technology
We’re constantly investing in the latest technology, training, software and systems. Our equipment and people are at the top of their game.
Fast, efficient service
Our business is based around service quality, flexibility and speed. We work with you to deliver the results you need, when you need them.
All monitoring projects depend on a stable monitoring location. We build concrete pillars where possible. Our survey system checks the position of this survey station prior to each set of monitoring readings and makes use of the updated geospatial position; thus an unstable monitoring point will still produce good results:
- Stable monitoring pillars contracted to minimise errors
- 24 hours a day track monitoring (two or three surveyors working in rotation)
- Hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or ad hoc measurements
- Real time automated solutions available
- Using latest Trimble S8 magdrive robotic total stations for accuracy and efficiency
Monitoring visits are manned by surveyors with systems set up to provide checks on potential observational errors – making sure false alarms are not raised. We are well aware of the speed restriction / line blocking implications of track movement.
Regardless of the type of deliverable provided (spreadsheet, online representations etc.) the following data would always be provided…
- Real time movement reports
- Onsite spreadsheet analysis (X, Y, Z changes)
- 3D DXF of rail alignment changes
- Isopachyte contours for surface deviations (in ‘mm’ or ‘m’ depending on areas covered)
- 3D scan clouds for complex surfaces
Whilst track monitoring results are automatically emailed to all stakeholders as required, results and other relevant documentation are also uploaded to our fully secure, encrypted monitoring portal. Each stakeholder has their own unique access details providing access to a range of files and permissions tailored to their specific role. Track monitoring results are searchable by site, date and time with all files downloadable direct to their desktops and saved for the project’s duration.
